2012 Municipal Traffic Safety Initiatives Conference
TMCEC is again offering this 12 hour, two-day conference, in cooperation with TxDOT, for municipal judges, clerks, and city officials.
There are over 234 billion miles traveled on Texas roadways each year. There were 298,278 injuries and 3,023 deaths in Texas last year. Over 6 million traffic cases were seen in Municipal Court in FY 2011. The Municipal Traffic Safety Initiatives Conference will touch on influencing safe driving behaviors in your community.
Courses include: Why Safe Driving in Important to Our Communities, Risk Perception Behind the Wheel: Why Dangerous Driving Choices Can Feel Safe, Traffic Safety and Transportation Related Case Law Update, Driving on the Right Side of the Road, Intoxicated Driving, Laws for Minor Drivers, Courts, Communities, and Classrooms: Educating the Public about the Law, Drugged Driving, Alive at 25, Insurance Laws and Offenses, Passenger Restraint Laws and Debates, Pedestrian and Bicycle Laws, Motorcycle Laws, DOT and Federal Motor Carrier Act Violations, Unmasking CDL Masking, K2 Bath Salts: Effects on Driving, Speed Limits, Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety, and Distracted Driving.
Conference registration is just $50 for Municipal Judges and Court Personnel and $100 for City Officials, and includes two nights housing in a double-occupancy room (as long as your court is not within a 30-mile radius of the conference site), breakfast and lunch on March 20th and breakfast on March 21st, and course materials. Participants can pay an extra $50 per night for a single room.
Primarily designed for municipal judges and clerks, a limited number of city officials – mayor, council person, or city manager – may attend if accompanied by a municipal judge/clerk. This conference will fulfill the mandatory education requirements for municipal judges, 12 hours of credit towards the clerk certification program, and 11.0 hours of CLE credit for attorneys. There is no CLE fee for this conference. No TCLEOSE credit is offered.

There are many benefits in attending this conference; however, one of the main benefits is bringing together a variety of people, such as city officials, to see how each person’s role is important in addressing the seriousness of traffic safety. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to gather educational resources on traffic safety.
Part of the TMCEC Municipal Traffic Safety Initiatives Conference 2012 are two Optional Pre-Conferences: There is no registration fee for attending either of the pre-conferences, and you do not have to attend the full conference to attend either of the pre-conferences. You do need to return the registration form for planning purposes.
Pre-Conference: Curbing Impaired Driving In Your Community: Blood Draws and No-Refusal Weekends, March 19, 2012 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Lunch is included. A Pre-Conference Session for City Officials, City Attorneys, Law Enforcement, and Judges. Licensed attorneys can receive up to 5.5 hours of CLE credit, including 1.0 hour of ethics credit. Licensed peace officers are eligible for 6.0 hours of TCLEOSE credit.

Pre-Conference: Juveniles Behind the Wheel: Tools for Reaching Young Drivers, March 19, 2012 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A Pre-Conference Session for municipal judges, court personnel, and juvenile case managers with two programs available to reach youthful drivers that can be presented in their courts and communities. Attendance at this pre-conference sesssion counts for 4 hours of credit towards the clerks certification program, and attorney's are eligible to receive up to 3.5 hours of CLE credit. No TCLEOSE credit will be given.
The first part of this four-hour program will present municipal judges, court personnel, and juvenile case managers with two programs available to reach youthful drivers that can be presented in their courts and communities:
DISTRACTED DRIVING FOR TEENS, a presentation by the Texas Municipal Police Association.
TEENS & TRUCKS: sharing the road, a curriculum developed by the Arizona Trucking Association, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The last part of this pre-conference session will discuss setting up a mock-trial in your court or community, from where to start to tips on executing a successful—and fun—learning experience.
